Cefpodoxime proxetil (Simplicef) is a third generation cephalosporin and is used primarily to treat skin infections in dogs- most of which are caused by Staphylococcus. It has been very useful in dogs that have bacterial skin infections that are resistant to other antibiotics. It is used once daily which makes it very convenient to administer. It is usually very well tolerated and has few side effects. I really think this is a good antibiotic for Staphylococcus infections, and most veterinarians seem to be familiar with the drug and its indications.

How it works:

Cefpodoxime proxetil is used to treat skin infections in dogs susceptible to certain bacteria strains as well as bladder and respiratory infections. • Even though cefpodoxime proxetil can be given without food, some pets do experience some digestive upset. Administer with food to lessen gastrointestinal side effects.
