Zonisamide is used to treat canine epilepsy and similar seizure disorders. For dogs that cannot tolerate Phenobarbital or potassium bromide, zonisamide may be a viable option. It may also be an option for dog owners who do not want to risk the side effects of phenobarbital or potassium bromide for their dog. While it is a newer medication, the drug has been proven to be beneficial to many dogs who have suffered from chronic seizures.
Give Zonisamide to your pet as directed by your veterinarian. Read label for dosing instructions. Do not give Zonisamide to your pet during pregnancy as it may cause birth defects in puppies and kittens. Side effects includes drowsiness, a decrease in coordination, and loss of appetite in dogs.
