Product Info:

Azithromycin for Oral Suspension, USP is an antibiotic (macrolide-type) used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

For:

Dogs and Cats

Benefits:

  • Treats infections of ears, lungs, skin, etc.
  • Treats infections caused by bacteria

How it works:

Azithromycin works by preventing bacteria from producing proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow replicate and increase in numbers. Azithromycin therefore stops the spread of infection and remaining bacteria are killed by the body's immune system or eventually die.

Storage:

Store suspension between 5-25°C(41-77°F)

How to Use:

Shake the suspension well before using. Take this medication by mouth with or without food, usually once a day, or as directed by your doctor. You may take this medication with food if stomach upset occurs. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. If you are giving this medication to a child, the dosage is also based on his/her weight.Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at the same time each day if taken daily.Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.Antacids may decrease the absorption of azithromycin. If you take an antacid, wait at least 2 hours after taking this medication.

Cautions:

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Use with caution in pets that are pregnant or nursing. Use with caution in pets suffering from hepatic disease. Do not use this medication in pets with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to any macrolide antibiotic. Common side effects in small animals include vomiting, reduced appetite, and diarrhea. Azithromycin may also interact with some other medications. Therefore, inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking cisapride or oral antacids. Finally, if you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while administering this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Side Effects:

Azithromycin should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to it or other macrolide antibiotics. In addition, it should be used with great caution if at all when there is preexisting liver disease. Gastrointestinal side effects may include vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain. Angioedema and cholestatic jaundice have been reported rarely in treated humans. Cardiac arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia, may be precipitated by azithromycin. Renal dysfunction, including interstitial nephritis and acute renal failure, may occur secondary to azithromycin treatment and liver function may be affected.
