Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine. Diphenhydramine is used to treat allergic reactions, atopic dermatitis, or itchy skin, motion sickness, vomiting, coughing, or anxiety. Histamines are chemicals that are released in the body in response to inflammation or allergies. When histamines attach to H-1 receptors in the body, it causes the blood vessels to widen which leads to swelling and itchiness. Diphenhydramine blocks the effects of histamines, reducing inflammation and itchiness.

For:

Dogs and Cats

Benefits:

  • Relieves coughing
  • Effectively relieves allergy symptoms and itching caused by insect bites
  • Helps heart beat more efficiently. Can be used as a sedative to treat motion sickness or travel anxiety

How it works:

Diphenhydramine comes in 25 mg mini tabs or 50 mg capsules, and is a generic version of Benadryl. As an antihistamine, it counteracts the effect of histamine, which causes symptoms like itching and sneezing.

  • The slow release capsule should NOT be mixed or dissolved in food. Do not use sinus or cold medications containing diphenhydramine in your pet.
