California Pet Pharmacy ships Gabapentin to ALL 50 states

Gabapentin requires a prescription from your veterinarian. This medication treats chronic pain such as pain associated with arthritis and other joint problems. In addition, it can be used to treat some seizure disorders. While the mechanism of action for this medication is unknown, it is believed that gabapentin works by decreasing calcium influx and inhibiting excitatory neurotransmitters. Gabapentin comes in either a tablet or a capsule in various strengths.

For:

Dogs

Benefits:

  • Helps manage chronic pain often associated with cancer or arthritis
  • Treats seizures

How it works:

Gabapentin stabilizes electrical activity in the brain which prevents seizures caused by excessive electrical activity. Gabapentin mimics the activity of GABA (a neurotransmitter) which helps to calm the nerve activity in the brain.

Storage:

Store in a cool dry place. Keep out of the reach of children.

Weight Dosage
All Weights For seizures: 4.5 mg-13.5 mg per pound every 8-12 hours.
For pain: 1.4 mg per pound once a day.

Cautions

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Tell your veterinarian if your pet suffers from kidney problems or renal insufficiency. Do not use this medication in pets that are pregnant or nursing. This medication may interact with some other medications. Therefore, be sure to inform your veterinarian of any medications your pet may be taking, especially oral liquids containing xylitol or narcotics. Use with caution if your pet has a known allergy to gabapentin. Do not stop treatment abruptly, as doing so can cause serious side effects, including seizures. If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while administering this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Side Effects

If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop giving Gabapentin and seek emergency veterinary medical attention; an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; swelling of the lips; tongue or face; hives). Side effects that can occur in dogs may include drowsiness, loss of balance, swelling of the limbs, and vomiting or diarrhea. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.
